NicNac says: I loved this as well! I prefer the Tahitian Flower scent but the Lily Mango is light & lovely as well. It is an oil but it’s not oily. I know that sounds funny but it literally sank into my skin quickly leaving me with super moisturized skin. I used it fresh out of the shower while my skin was still wet and I didn’t need any lotion after. By the way, I have “Sahara Desert” dry skin so this is huge for me.
I would totally buy this but in the Tahitian Flower scent!

I am a HUGE Tarte Cosmetics fan! Not only are most of their products environmentally conscientous they are high quality and pocket friendly. I have several Tarte reviews in the works including my ALL TIME FAVORITE eyeliner.

Since I have several Tarte faves, I had been dying to get my hands on this. As I have said before, I have extremely oily skin and have tried dozens (upon dozens) of face primer to combat “the shinies”.

My makeup did literally sit on top of my skin and not sink in but I was an oily, slimy mess within an hour. If I had read the description I would have realized that I am not the target audience for the product.

Rating: I am sure this is the ideal product for dry or combo skin just not for me. I still LOVE you, Tarte!!!

NicNac says: What did it do for me? Nothing.... It wasn't bad, it wasn't good. I used the entire container waiting for the radiance and I swear I did not see a difference whatsoever. But it did not break me out so that's a plus! Maybe I am not the target audience.

Rating: For $70 Bucks, "keep looking"!

Back in November, I ran across a blog for a company called SkinAgain, http://www.skinagain.com/.

The developer of one of their new products, Pigment Correct, ($32.00), blogged it's effectiveness for women of color in reducing hyperpigmentation and dark marks. They awarded a free full size jar of Pigment Correct to the first 20 responses and luckily I was one of them!

Review:

I used Skinagain's pigment correct twice a day for thirty days. The consistency of the formula is a little bit thinner than a regular cream but thicker than a serum. It spread very easily and only a bit is need for the entire face.

After washing and/or exfoliating my face, I rinse well but always leave my face a little damp before applying the cream. I do this to help the products absorb better and because it helps to not use so much product. The product absorbs pretty face and I let dry completely before applying any other products.

NicNac says:

I can definitely see a difference in the clarity of my skin. The right side of my face has a medium sized patch of hyperpigmentation from a "chemical peel gone wrong" that has lightened up dramatically. I also had some smaller blemishes from my monthly acnes attacks that have all almost disappeared. I have incredibly oily, sometimes acne prone skin and this did not cause any excessive oilness or break me out at all.

Rating: I definitely give this product a "run and buy"!

Starting Over!

Hello Beauty Chicas!

It's been almost a year since I last posted and I have decided to start over and concentrate on what is near and dear to my heart. Beauty Products!!! So I am gearing the blog exclusively (yeah, right!) towards beauty product reviews!

I decided to close my last beauty blog for a couple of different reasons. One, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with the format of it, eg. Fashion, beauty, or gossip. Secondly, I received some EXTREMELY psychotic comments and then emails which freaked me out! Third, my husband was deployed right in the thick of it and I became just too depressed to write anything.

I recently decided to start over! Thanks to my twitter gals (especially @MorenaBarbie, that encouraged me the most). I am going to write about what I am most passionate about “BEAUTY PRODUCTS”! Anyone that knows me knows that I am a BBG (Brown Beauty Girl)! My bathroom, bedroom, and closet are overflowing. It’s really ridiculous! It’s all in an effort in personal journey to find my “Holy Grail” in each product category.

I am very budget savvy so I will post any deals I run across whether they are beauty focused or not (hey, a SALE is a SALE is a SALE).
I will also be sponsor a couple of giveaways, some extremely easy to win and some will take some work on the readers part. More to come on that…….

Hey Chicas!

I'm sorry for the lack of updates. It started out innocently! I swear! I was super depressed about my husband being deployed then I had a death n the family and went to Chicago for a while. After I came back I recieved a super duper promotion (get it girl!) but I am still in school full-time. Soooooo, my life is hella busy right now. I won't be posting anything for a while on here. But I am on Twitter now. I just figured out how to use it and I will post any deals I find on there. You can find me @nicnacbeauty!

1. I do not work for any clothing or makeup company. I work for a hospital locally. Nothing fashion related. Very boring but not and it pays the bills well.

P.S. I use megatek maybe once per month. It works but I am too busy to spend that much time on my hair the way I used to.

Beauty Review: Bliss Triple Oxygen Mask

Maybe it's me but I tried, tried and tried again. This mask did absolutely nothing for me. I used two 5 ml samples (about 10 applications) to give it a fair shot but I get better results with a plain old aspirin mask.

Generally, I tend to lean towards purchasing items for quality and not so much quantity. I am definitely running out of closet space and I am really amazed by the amount of laundry I have every week. I ran across a website http://www.flyjane.net/ (I think I saw it on cheapchica.com, I ADORE her by the way) and I became totally enamored with SEVERAL pairs of shoes. I succumbed and placed an order. I received my box on Saturday and I have waited a couple of days to write this review.

And I have to say, “MY FLIPPING FEET WERE KILLING ME!”

The yellow shoes are extremely dangerous!
Now, I am no shoe novice and completely live by the “beauty is pain” theory but this is ridiculous. I wore the yellow beauties to church ( I live in Florida by the way) with a yellow NY & Co. cardigan and black skirt from Layers (here’s the skirt: http://www.layersclothing.com/jillian.php LUST!).

I received sooo many compliments but the tears that glistened in my eyes at church was not because I felt the “spirit”. I did not take the shoes off at all during church as much as I wanted to and as my husband suggested. My 96-year old granny that always wore a pillbox hat & white gloves to church would have turned over in her grave if I had. I REALLY want these babies to work. What can I say, I am in love!

I went today and bought a shoe stretcher ($16.99 but I have been meaning to buy one), gel insoles ($8.99), & shoe pads (4.00 SALE). I have had the augmented shoes on for several hours while washing dishes, doing homework, & walking to the mailbox (I looked ridiculous, by the way). My feet feel fine. FINALLY. Were the shoes really a good deal? Me thinks not!

I haven’t tried the black ones yet. J

Mr. NicNac, Navy Hero

I am writing this post early because I don't think I will be able to later. My husband, Mr. NicNac, is in the Navy (whom I have a love/hate relationship with) and he is deploying on Saturday for six months. We have been together for almost four years but we have been married less than one year. We have never been apart more than a month (and even then I flew to visit him twice).
My heart is absolutely breaking because I really don't know what to do without him. He's my friend, we hang out, and the LOVE of my life. It will be hard, I know. I will miss him dearly.
I took off work this week so we can hang out all week. We golfed today at the PGA Laterra, we slept until 11:00am (unheard of), we went to Universal in Orlando and acted like absolute idiots. I could devote an entire post to the Bob Marley Club in citywalk. Tomorow we are going to take a ride (he has a sportbike) to Fernandina Beach, have brunch, and just hold hands. We are completely honeymooning and I have never been happier. I am going to post this now so I can read this in a week after he is gone and I am a mess!

Speaking of recipes, I have to share something. I ran across a recipe the other day on a Campbell's can of "Cream of Shrimp" soup. I turned it into a sort of "Creole shrimp stew".
My husband loves Cajun food.

Ingredients:
1 can of Campbell's Cream of Shrimp Soup
1 can of milk
1 bag of medium size shrimp (71-90 count), I used the frozen kind
Green Onions
1 cup of white rice, I used the frozen steam bag (5 minutes, perfectly done! I LUV it!)

I cooked the soup first and set it to the side. I steamed (microwaved) the bag of rice and set that to the side while I cooked the shrimp (until pink) in olive oil, seasoning and a bit of butter. I added the green onions & spinach leaves to the shrimp and let them simmer for a while and I added the white rice to the soup. I then mixed it all together in a bigger pan and top it with the Creole seasoning for spiciness. VIOLA! Yumminess! I think this took 15 minutes tops.
I did this all while wearing the dress and heels I wore to work and served my husband. :-)

By the way, I got a hellafied "thank you" that night!

Garnier Fructis Instant Melting Conditioner Moisture Works (Target, $2.99!!!!)

Hey all! I was walking to the ethnic beauty “corner” in target and walked past a plethora of Garnier hair products on sale. I thought “since it’s on sale, it must suck” and “this probably will not work on my hair”.

Boy, was I wrong! Since it was only $2.99 and my money has been looking funny lately and I am almost out of Organix (the love of my life) AND I decided to be more open-minded, I tried it.

I parted my hair and slathered the product onto my new growth and combed it through with my Jibere shower comb and it “melted” my new growth into manageable curls. I coated every strand and plopped on my heating cap and did some homework. Forty-five minutes later I washed it out and my hair was soft & silky.

I definitely was amazed. $2.99! Can you believe it?? I have since used it 3 more times just to be sure. I know everything doesn’t work for everybody but I loved this one!

Verdict: Jump on it immediately!

FYI: This is a part of the moisture works line. There are a couple of different ones, sleek & shine and strength & repair but I haven’t tried those yet.

Do I have a regimen?

I guess I am still diddling with/deciding what my regimen is. Right now I am doing the following:

1. Co-washing primarily 2-3 times a week except when I have buildup then I use Aveda to clarify.
2. I deep condition at least once a week. I am now using the Organix Coconut Conditioner. I love it!
3. I am applying the Curlaway every morning as a leave in to my new growth and it seems to be working. My hair is very soft, no shedding.
4. I only use protein treatments 2-3 times a month mostly using Aphogee or a week of Surge Plus 14.
5. I have been wearing my protective styles alternating between ponytails, buns & half-wigs.
Of course, any of this is subject to change in the next five minutes except the protective styles.

Miss Bessie Update

This post is not meant to offend, insult, or upset anyone. I used the entire bowl of the “Miss Bessie” concoction (see earlier post) and I did not experience ANYTHING. No growth but no negative experiences either. It ended up being very greasy & oily. It seemed to be a couple of essential oils mixed with petroleum but I could be wrong.

Verdict: Pass, absolutely.

Protective Styles!

Of course I did the requisite internet search for protective styles and didn’t really find much. I ran across a couple of the BHM & LHCF member’s fotkis to check what everyone else was doing and got some great ideas. I am recreating some of these styles and will be adding to my very own Fotki, NicNacBeauty, of course. In the meanwhile below are some pictures of my favorite buns.

My Mistress…Ssh! The Mane Clip

Okay on the exact same day I ordered my beloved UPA clip (see earlier post); I also order another clip I ran across. My search led me to a video on YouTube of a black woman with average length hair whipping on a ponytail. I watched the video thinking “it looks so easy”. The “Mane Clip”, sold on www.themaneclip.com and the starting price is a mere $9.99 (this is clip only, no hair attached).

Concept: It’s very similar to the UPA clip except there isn’t any hair sewn to the clip. The clip has these prongs that you attach a pack (or half, if you don’t like thick hair) of hair. You can buy the hair from the website but I didn’t. I just used a cheap pack from the local BSS, since it’s just a ponytail and it’s a test run.

Pros:
• Much cheaper than the UPA especially since you can use whatever pack of hair you want.
• The UPA clip limits the style of the ponytail to the type of hair you purchase but with the mane clip you can change the hair from straight to curly to wavy. Whatever you like.
• The creator of the mane clip has an instructional video on her website for those of you that are visual learners.
• Since the price is cheaper you can buy more than one color/style of the clip to match your outfit.

Cons:
• It really is such a shame there is a market for this and that I am so excited about it.
• The UPA clip comes ready made to snap on in a second and it feels more secure to me.
• The concept of both clips are so simple I want to kick myself for of thinking of it myself.

Both clips are great, especially if you hate the cheap, phony looking drawstrings like me. I always, always get a headache when I try to wear a drawstring ponytail. Since no one I personally know is even aware of the existence of either invention, I seem always at the forefront of hair fashion and now you can too.

I purchased 3 sample tubes of each of these Elemis products from Ebay (247beautyshop, 13.94 total for all, great seller by the way!)

Elemis Papaya Peel: The truth! It does not make your skin peel, it’s more of an exfoliator but I loved it. My face was clear, smooth & soft. I truly believe it may have contributed to making my dark marks lighter (in conjuction with the Bio-Oil)

Verdict: A definite keeper

Elemis Herbal Lavender Repair Mask: Ehh! It was okay! Nothing to write home about. I gave it to my mom who has sun damage.

Verdict: Pending

Elemis Skin Buff: Very weak exfoliator with a weird smell. I didn’t get past tube number two.

Verdict: Pass

Short story: Out of town, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. One mall, small salon. I left my ORS leave-in at home by mistake and the mall was walking distance. I was wearing a self-made half wig (body wave hair) and the conditioner made my curls pop, Christina Milian style. I thought I was in love again! But alas, I got home and used it as a leave-n on my natural hair and it sucked. Once it dried, it took my poor hair with it. I tried it twice and had to deep condition twice to reverse the effects. I will keep it to use on my wavy half wigs.

Sulfate free, organic, sweet, hair magic. I have been being more selective in my hair care purchases and I have seen the Organix line in the drugstore. One day, while lurking on LHCF, I read a couple of positive reviews and decided to try it. I used it as a deep conditioner (concentrating on my out of control new growth) with a heating cap. It smells so heavenly and after I rinsed I knew I had a new favorite.

Verdict: Silky soft hair with tons of slip. Yep!

My Usage: I use it a little differently. I mix the Shikakai with Amla powder, coconut , vatka oil with distilled water and I make a paste. I apply it like a relaxer on Saturday mornings for a couple of hours while I clean the house or tackle my homework.

Verdict: It definitely softens my hair especially new growth and the Amla deepens my hair to a shiny black color I love. I will continue to use every weekend. Two snaps AND a circle!

Rumors: It is supposed to prevent shedding and moisturize dry hair.

My Usage: The same, just used it as a shampoo

Verdict: I wouldn’t say that it is the most moisturizing shampoo I have ever used but I have definitely had less shedding since I started using it. A keeper!

Miss Bessie Reed: Another EBay Review (long, sorry)

Okay. My sister thinks I am insane and you may as well after you read this post.

I was searching EBay for a deal on essential oils and I ran across an auction for “Annaleic Oil”, (http://stores.ebay.com/BESSIE-REED-PRODUCTS). The listing really didn’t say anything spectacular and the creator didn’t list all of their ingredients BUT there was a before and after picture that showed a slight difference. So I read every listing she had posted & I read all of her feedback and didn’t see anything concerning. I then googled her and the product but couldn’t find anything. I watched the listing for 2 days then decided to e-mail some of her customers to see if I could get any feedback.
Out of the seven people I e-mailed, three responded with good feedback. One young lady “prettyeyes” was particularly detailed and forthcoming. She indicated she has experienced some growth since she began using the product and her hair seemed healthier. I was still terrified. I have heard horror stories about EBay but the “buy it now” price wasn’t bad ($0.00 plus free shipping) so I succumbed. I ordered it on July 7th and received it July 11th.

Impressive.

The directions were sparse and there wasn’t an ingredients list.

BUT the main reason why my sister thinks I am insane:

The oil came in a small glad bowl in a brown paper bag inside an envelope.

She said it looked like contraband. I informed my misguided sister that just because the package isn’t pretty doesn’t mean it won’t work. Right? RIGHT???

The instructions say that it can be used on wet or dry hair and since my husband wasn’t home I decided to do a whole beauty night and cap it off with the oil. After my shampoo and deep conditioner, I towel dried my hair and pried the top off the product. It didn’t smell bad, actually no smell at all. The texture is more like a grease and I could see tiny specks. It looked like grapeseed/ shea butter/jojoba mixture but who knows? So I pretty much parted my hair in the “old school” sections and “greased” my scalp (a total throwback!) and combed it through to the ends with a wide tooth comb. I used Profectiv Strengthening Treatment on my severely split & tattered ends and wrapped up my hair. It says use one or twice a day which will be easy with my “Hide Your Hair challenge”. The listing says “results in 7 days”. Hmm. I took a couple of “before” pics so I will keep you guys updated.

Individually, they both vary from suckyness to average. The Suave is too watery & weak and the DPR really didn’t do anything (ANYTHING) as far as I could tell.

My first EBay Lovers review-Wei East Facial Treatment

I purchased Wei East-Chinese Herbal Beautiful Beginnings 3R Facial Treatment from karen9559 on EBay for $5.97.

Background info: I saw a Wei East Collection which included this treatment on HSN.com during their 4th of July sale (everything broken down into 4 easy payments) but the whole set was just too entirely expensive especially since I hadn’t tried it before. The reviews were good but the price wasn’t so I looked for it on EBay.

So…. I found it and bought it on July 5th and received it on Tuesday July 8th. Not Bad!

Side note: The container was much smaller than I thought it would be but it’s my fault for not reading carefully.

First Try: I mixed both containers together as per the instructions, let the concoction dry and then wiped it off with a warm towel. Nothing. Really, nothing special, no dewy skin or anything. I let my face air dry and left for work. I didn’t want to put anything else on my face to see if I could see any effect at all. An hour later, nothing. My skin actually looked oily. So I ducked into my office and made myself a bit more presentable. At the end of the day my makeup actually didn’t disappear completely this time. So I am going to try it again in a couple of days. Although, the instructions say once a week.

Second & Third: Pretty much the same. Nothing special. Will not purchase again.

The UPA CLIP!!!

I was going to schedule this post for next week but I couldn't wait!

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT!

Did I mention that I LOVE IT?

My girlfriends and I decided to have a “Hide Your Hair Challenge” for the month of July and maybe August if all goes well (more on that later). In an effort to keep my hair “funky fresh”, I decided to purchase a couple of half-wigs, ponytails, etc.

In my searching (all over the ENTIRE internet) I came across a blog, Brown Sista, I think. She reviewed a product called the UPA Clip, http://www.laceflair.com/.

In a nutshell, it’s a thick hairclip with the hair already attached to it.
No glue, no sewing, no tape, etc. The clip fits snugly whether or not you are rapunzel.

Soooo, I rip up the box and try it out!
I pretty much slathered my “product” I am using right now and then used my essential oils concoction on my ends and put my ponytail in an itty, bitty bun. I bought the 8-inch wavy human hair ponytail because it was on sale (less than $20.00) and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money in case I didn’t like it.
I do….. LOVE IT!
I just snapped the ponytail on over my itty, bitty. The clip was snug, not too tight where it would break off your hair but I didn’t worry about it falling off the entire day.
I was so cute, shaking my ponytail around. It looks sooo natural and no worries about blending.

With this product, this challenge will be a breeze! I am doing before & after growth pictures that I MAY post! Maybe.

Is there a way to block EBay?

Hi, my name is NicNac and I have an addiction.

In the last 2 weeks I have gone pretty EBay crazy. Instead of stalking the Ulta & Sephora ladies, I decided to take pity on my lovely little coach wallet and started buying sample sizes of products I want to try from EBay for the following reasons:

1. I do not get paid for this. I have an actual job & actual bills.
2. My bathroom/closets/counters are over run with products.
3. BECAUSE! (as my 13 year old daughter would say)

Truthfully, I am extremely embarrassed to divulge that I actually, accidently bought a couple of duplicates last week. Sheesh!

So where to find a plethora of reasonably priced samples?
EBay, of course! I found samples of Wei East & Elemis products I have been lusting after and I picked up some all natural Indian powders & oils I have been curious about (see earlier post). I even bought this hair growth oil I ran across.

Why? BECAUSE. I don’t know (sheepishly).

I will be reviewing each thing I purchased very shortly. Primarily because the seller feedback page on EBay doesn’t allow much room for people to say whether they actually liked the product. Yes, I am aware the page is for “seller” feedback. I need to know what my imaginary cyber girlfriends think before I take the plunge. I've actually started pestering the brave souls that have purchased before me to see if the product was any good. Sorry. Not!

Hair Envy...uh oh!

So I saw a former co-worker of mine today in TarJe (Target) and was AMAZED! Her hair has grown at least 4-6 inches since I last saw her in March. Of course, my nosyitis took over (it’s a disease).
She gave me the following tidbits of wisdom:

Since her Indian roommate’s hair wasn’t completely unlike our (we are both 4b) texture she decided to try Henna & Amla powders. Since she wears weaves, like moi at times, she decided only to relax the very crown of her head and the only parts visible. Therefore, none of the creamy crack (relaxer, yall!) has to touch the back of her head. Brilliant!!!

She sprays CHI Silk Infusion mist on her scalp and braids every night under the sew-in. The infusion mist is keratin which is the protein our hair has and needs to grow strong.

So, being the PJ that I am, I immediately scooted over to the hair section and picked up the CHI mist ($13.00, Target). I will keep you posted on the Indian products. I need to do some research!!!

I like the coverage it gives, it's very smooth ( I use a concealer brush) and it lasts a long time but beware of wearing high neck shirts. It kind of rubs off a bit on clothes and I hate that so I got a bright idea to use the following as well.

I apply with a concealer brush a mixer of coffee, cappuccino, & chestnut mineral powder on each spot after I use the beauticontrol. I apply the translucent powder as a finisher afterwards.

Voila! I can keep my secret, a secret, for at least a day longer…..

P.S. By the way, I am still using the Ada samples after 3 months. They are pretty generous with the baggies! They are a little difficult to use in the bag so I went to a craft store and bought little containers to make my life easier! Smiles!

After lurking for six months on the Black hair forum, I decided to try out a Dominican Salon here in Jacksonville. The Dominican salons, mostly, recieved rave reviews on all of the hair boards so I figured it would just be "magic".

Okay. The Dominican salon. Maybe my expectations were too high or not! I was not pleased with the service (waiting FOREVER, the staff speaking the ENTIRE time in spanish, being told by hair was to short to work "right", etc.). I did call first to make sure the salon worked with african-american hair and short hair.

To make a long story short, my hair was UGGGGLY but they used a wonderful product "Baba de Caracol Hair Loss Treatment (16oz) ". Although my head was killing me for three days after my hair was so soft and there was no shedding. So, like the beauty researcher I am, I ran across a wonderful site, "http://www.roundbrushhair.com/" for $13.99. I applied it like a relaxer at the scalp and coating the ends once a week for a month. I LOVE it!!!!

I swear my hair feels stronger and I see less of it in the sink. I also bought several other things that I will be reviewing later.
